First co-ed volleyball tourney held

Boulder City High School’s volleyball team hosted its first co-ed tournament Friday. The community event, open to people of all ages in Boulder City and Henderson, was dubbed “Kings and Queens of the Court.”

The tournament featured eight teams in two pools. Competing were: Abusement Park, Mix Matched Smasher, Basic Wolves, Ball Smashers, Practice Safe Sets, Southwest Diner, Crush and Mystery Team.

The teams consisted of a mixture of teens from Boulder City High School, alumni and adults from both cities. Volleyball coach Cherise Hinman said it made for a real mix of interesting talent.

“What I love about volleyball is it is a sport that both men and women can compete with and against aggressively with pretty fair results,” Hinman said.

The championship bracket pitted Abusement Park against Practice Safe Sets. It also included a match between Crush and Basic Wolves. Both Abusement Park and Crush advanced, where Crush won in three games.

In the consolation bracket, Southwest Diner played Ball Smashers and Mixed Mash faced Mystery Team. Southwest Diner and Mixed Mash advanced to the championship, with Mixed Mash winning.

“I’d like to thank all the teams who participated,” Hinman said. “We look to do this again next year in addition to something over Homecoming week where we are planning an alumni volleyball match.”
