While the main focus of Boulder City’s Homecoming Week is the football game tomorrow night against visiting Virgin Valley, the girls volleyball team wants to add to the week’s festivities with a victory of their own over their rival.
“We always have to prove we are better than Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley. We have already beat Moapa Valley and now it is Virgin Valley’s turn,” senior hitter Whitney Barlow said. “Plus, it’s homecoming.”
The Lady Eagles, 10-8 overall and 3-0 in Sunrise League, will play their homecoming game today against Virgin Valley (7-11, 2-1).
On Sept. 25, Boulder City defeated Moapa Valley in Overton, a 25-23, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23.
A homecoming victory is important to the girls.
“Homecoming week is super exciting because we get to be presented at the bonfire and it really gets us motivated for the rest of the season,” senior Kendall Miller said. “We are finally settling into our rotations and we should dominate the rest of the regular season, and hopefully through the playoffs.
“Homecoming week is great because we are a part of it. And, we get to play and beat an old school rival.”
The Lady Eagles are the only unbeaten team in their league. They can extend that lead by beating Virgin Valley today and rival Chaparral on Monday. Both matches are at home.
A year ago, Boulder City was 28-8 overall and 12-0 in the Sunrise League. They were upset by Chaparral, a team they beat twice in league play, in the Southern Region semifinal.
“I feel like we have finally figured out how to work as a team and feed off each other,” Barlow said. “This is when the season becomes fun because we can do trick plays and fun rotations. It is getting much more competitive. I look forward to the league matches.”
The Lady Eagles were scheduled to play Monday at Sierra Vista and at home against Sunrise Mountain.
Cross-Country
The boys and girls cross-country team had a tri-meet Tuesday at Tech where they ran against Tech and Sunrise Mountain. They will face Moapa Valley at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hemenway Park.
Girls Golf
The Lady Eagles, led by Jordyn Syler, will play a league match today at Stallion Mountain Golf Course. On Sept. 25, Syler was the medalist with an 86 at Las Vegas National, but the Lady Eagles were second as a team to Tech by three strokes in a Division I-A Sunrise League match. Tech shot 442, while the Lady Eagles fired a 445.
The Sunrise League meet will be played Wednesday at The Canyons.
Tennis
Not everyone gets to enjoy the football homecoming game and its festivities. The Boulder boys and girls tennis teams will be traveling Friday to Overton to end their regular season schedules with a match against Moapa Valley.
The undefeated Lady Eagles (9-0) are expected to win and secure a playoff spot.
“Our girls’ team should be unbeaten heading into regional, and that will give us a better seeding and a better chance for advancement in the regional,” junior Melissa O’Berto said. “But part of our sacrifice is having to play on the road on a special night when everyone else back at our school celebrating and having a great time at the homecoming football game.”
Taylor Finn was 3-0 in singles Sept. 27, as the Lady Eagles defeated Desert Pines, 18-0. On Sept. 25, they beat Sunrise Mountain 16-2.
The boys team (3-6) began the week in fifth place, trying to climb into fourth place and the final playoff seeding.
“We are working incredibly hard to move up from fifth to fourth and get that playoff spot,” Eric Gros said. “It would be so incredible to achieve the unexpected two years in a row. We found a way to make the playoffs last season, and I think we can do it again.”
