Spring greens bring hope

Every time I look out into my backyard I am reminded about the beauty and promises of hope that spring brings.

Green sprigs and leaves are popping out of all the trees and bushes that went dormant over the winter. Tiny fruits are starting to develop on some of the trees. A new garden has been planted and is already started to blossom.

When they say hope springs eternal I’m not sure they meant that the warm, sunny days of spring will bring hope eternally, but that’s how I see it.

Even though we are still a few days away from the official start of spring, the season has arrived.

With the cold and rainy days a thing of the past, people are beginning to venture outdoors. My calendar for the next few weeks is bursting with events that should entice folks to join in the festivities.

Saturday morning the Senior Center of Boulder City is presenting its first Rock, Roll & Stroll in Veterans’ Memorial Park. The event, a benefit for its Meals on Wheels program, invites families to join them for a short walk around the park, ride in a wheelchair or even sit in a rocking chair for a while.

If that were not enough activity at the park, Boulder City Little League will host its opening day. There will be plenty of pomp and circumstance for the opening ceremonies, but plenty of fun on the field as well.

But there’s more.

The municipal pool will hold the first Easter pool plunge, which is an egg hunt but in the water. Kids will have the chance to dive for treasure in the new event.

At night, the chamber of commerce will present a Mardi Crawl wine walk.

The following week brings the 62nd annual Easter Egg Hunt to Wilbur Square Park. I have no doubt that several hundred children will be happy to scramble across the grassy expanse gathering up treats and treasures while enjoying the sunshine.

The same day, the folks from the local Relay for Life organization are presenting a giant garage sale to help raise funds in their fight against cancer. Surely their efforts bring hope to many.

The end of March brings the annual Beerfest on Saturday and a community Easter sunrise service on Sunday. While polar opposites, they both bring together area residents to celebrate the season and enjoy fellowship in the great outdoors.

April is just as busy with an Old School Block Party, another wine walk, an art festival presented by the Boulder City Art Guild and Paint the Town Purple scavenger hunt presented by the Relay for Life team.

While a calendar full of activities may not signal a season of rebirth and renewed hope like the return of green to a garden, nevertheless as people spring forth from their winter havens the camaraderie they create when gathering together brings a promise of a happier tomorrow.
