The 99 Cents Only Store in Boulder City was shut down on May 10 for the second time in a month. The shop at 800 Buchanan Blvd. was forced to close because of a rat infestation. The store was previously shut down for a day for the same reason on April 25.
Store manager John English said that they have complied with the Southern Nevada Health District and the store has received an A rating.
“The health department found some evidence of a pest infestation when we thought we had handled the problem,” English said. “This time we took out all the insulation on the selling floor and made sure there was no rat problem.”
The health report states that evidence of nesting activity was found throughout the store. The report cites that rat feces and urine were found as well as chewed through products like paper towels and food boxes.
Since the store reopened English has invited the health district to come for weekly inspections and he said the store plans to hire a part-time inspector. “I invite the health department to come by anytime, “English said. “We want to do everything we can to ensure that this will never happen again.” According to the health district’s report, the pest infestation is coming from outside the store.
English said he told the health department that he would contact the corporate office to check if the rats were coming from the 99 Cents Only Store’s distribution center in Commerce, California.
The store is currently opened and has had no other health issues.
