Science-related activities planned at Lake Mead
Lake Mead National Recreation Area is hosting a free family-friendly science-related event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Boulder Beach picnic area as part of the kickoff to the annual Las Vegas Science and Technology Festival Week.
There will be interactive fire and rescue equipment, a make your own binoculars activity, archaeology games, live reptiles and water safety education. Additionally, biking safety tips will be presented and free bike helmets given to children, while supplies last.
Families can learn the science of training dogs to be a part of the Park Service’s ranger team and watch Cinna and Rex, the K-9 working dogs of the recreation area, in action. They also can participate in a nature art quilt project and meet Charlotte, a junior bark ranger.
Coastie, the talking safety boat, and Smokey Bear will appear.
Once through the stations, children will be sworn in as junior rangers and receive a patch.
The event is being held in partnership with the Clark County School District.

Library seeking new board trustee
Boulder City Library District is seeking a local resident to serve as a member of its board of trustees.
The vacancy was created with board member Kerry Ahearn resigned.
The trustees are responsible for governing the operation of the library, including how public funds are spent, handling its assets and setting the direction for its operation.
The board meets monthly for one to two hours on a Wednesday night.
Interested residents can fill out an application on the library’s website, bclibrary.org, or obtain one at the reference desk at the library, 701 Adams Blvd. The deadline to submit an application is May 12.
Those who previously applied and would like to be considered again just have to contact the library and let the board know.
Man taken to hospital by helicopter after crash
A man was transported by helicopter to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas on Friday after a two-car crash put him in critical condition.
The crash occurred at 11 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 93 and Industrial Road. The crash was caused because of a failure to yield, according to Boulder City Fire Department, which responded to the scene and had to extricate the man from his vehicle.
Acting Police Chief John Glenn said that as of Tuesday afternoon the man was still hospitalized and his condition has been downgraded to serious.
The other driver and a passenger in the first vehicle were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
A black Nissan pickup truck and silver Volkswagen were involved in the crash.
