Two injured in single-car crash
An elderly couple was injured in a single-car crash Monday on Northshore Road in Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
The LMNRA Interagency Communication Center received a call at 12:15 about a vehicle that was off the road between mile markers 16 and 17.
Officials from Careflight, the Clark County Fire Department, Henderson Police Department and the National Park Service found a recreational vehicle that had dropped nearly 15 feet off an embankment.
The vehicle — which was found right-side up — had an Arizona license plate, although it unknown where the couple was heading.
The 89-year old man was transported to a nearby hospital while the 87-year old women was transported by air because of the severity of her injuries. Neither sustained life-threatening injuries.
Northshore Road remained closed for about an hour, according to the Park Service. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Cox to televise Christmas parade
Cox Las Vegas will record, produce and televise this year’s Santa’s Electric Night Parade on Cox Channel 96, Channel 1096 and via streaming video at www.Cox96.net throughout the month of December. The parade broadcast will be hosted by Fox5 News This Morning anchors Maria Silva and Dave Hall.
The parade begins at 4:30 p.m. Saturday and travels through the downtown historic district. It will be broadcast at 6 nightly from Dec. 11-26.
Students to create holiday cards for veterans
The Nevada Department of Veterans Services has started a new holiday tradition, Christmas cards for veterans, a project run in conjunction with schools throughout the state.
Jana McElhaney, event coordinator for the department, is working with schools to have students create holiday cards that will be delivered to servicemen and women at the Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City as well as nursing home facilities in Northern Nevada.
“The first cards have been received from Dayton High School,” McElhaney said. “The school is part of the Lyon County School District. We’ve also contacted the superintendents in the counties of Clark, Storey, Churchill, Washoe, Humboldt and Carson City, and we’re looking forward to receiving cards from the schools there.
“We’re going to distribute them mostly by personal delivery,” she said. “We want to do everything we can to make it special for the veterans.”
McElhaney said the state’s Veterans Services Department is planning to develop the card program as an annual tradition.
Each card will be accompanied by a pair of new slippers that were donated by the Northern Nevada Veterans Coalition, part of an earlier donation of more than 8,000 that the coalition has been distributing to veterans and military members throughout Nevada.
Students have been encouraged to show off their artwork with drawings and photographs. Handmade cards including any that are computer-generated are preferred.
“We encourage students to be creative. They can add their poetry and express their sincere support for the service the veteran provided,” McElhaney said.
