Military appreciation day on tap at Lake Mead
In celebration of Veterans Day, the Lake Mead Institute, Forever Resorts and Lake Mead Cruises are hosting a military appreciation day Nov. 14. Military members, veterans and their families are invited to the park to participate in a variety of free and heavily discounted activities.
Entrance to all national parks will be free for all visitors on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
Among the planned activities:
Black Canyon National Water Trail raft trip: Forever Resorts is hosting a military appreciation raft trip 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Raft along the Colorado River below Hoover Dam. Participants will learn about the history of the dam, desert wildlife and the region’s only national water trail aboard a motor-assisted inflatable raft. Lunch is provided. Special pricing for the event is $15 per person; it is regularly $92. Space is limited. For reservations, call 800-455-3490. Each military member may bring up to three guests; military members must accompany their guests and show military identification or DD214.
Historic Railroad Trail hike: A ranger will lead the free hike starting at 9:30 a.m. Participants will hike through historic railroad tunnels and get panoramic views of Lake Mead while learning the history of Hoover Dam, how the railroad helped support the building of the dam and what its significance is today. The flat, gravel trail can accommodate strollers. Pets on leashes are welcome. Space is limited. Call 702-293-8990 for more information and to make a reservation.
Military appreciation cruise: Cruise to Hoover Dam and back on a Mississippi-style paddle wheeler at noon or 2 p.m. Lake Mead Cruises is offering a complimentary ticket to military members and veterans with a military ID or DD214. Tickets for family members are $19.50, a 25 percent discount; children 2-11 are $13. The Lake Mead entrance fee will be waived for those participating in the cruise. Space is limited. Visitor Center Junior Ranger activity: Children can earn their Junior Ranger badge at the Lake Mead Visitor Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through a variety of hands-on educational activities about plants and animals of the desert along with a postcard art activity. To earn a badge, kids will take an oath to protect parks, continue to learn about parks and share their ranger story with friends and family. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
Single airman hike to Arizona Hot Spring: Single airmen are invited to participate in a free challenging ranger-led hike to Lake Mead’s Arizona Hot Spring. It is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. After hiking about three miles, participants will have the opportunity to soak in the 110-degree spring or the Colorado River. Participants will be transported by boat to Willow Beach where they can eat lunch. Then, hikers will be shuttled back to their cars. The hike is limited to 20 participants. Registration is required. Free America the Beautiful Pass: Active-duty service members can pick up a free annual pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites, including Lake Mead National Recreation Area and Red Rock Canyon at the Lake Mead Visitor Center or any entrance station. Library board seeks new trustee
Boulder City Library District is seeking people to serve on its board of trustees. The board oversees all library operations.
The library district board is made up of five members appointed by the Clark County Commissioners. Appointments are made for four-year terms.
To be eligible to serve on the board, a candidate must reside in Boulder City.
The board meets at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at the library, except during May when it meets on the third Thursday.

Storm causes road closures within Lake Mead Recreation Area
A few roads within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area were closed Monday due to overnight storm damage, the park announced.
Willow Beach and Temple Bar access roads were temporarily closed due to rock, debris and water across the roadway. Maintenance crews were working to have the roads reopened by days end.
Nevada Telephone Cove Road near Katherine Landing was closed after an abandoned RV was stuck in the mud. Park authorities were trying to locate the owner.
Pearce Ferry Road remained open inside of park boundaries. County officials are however escorting drivers around the surrounding debris.
The National Park Service also said crews weren’t able to access back country roads, but say Christmas Tree Pass and Grapevine Canyon Road have known damage. The same could not be confirmed for St. Thomas Road, although authorities say damage is likely.
NDOT proposes changes to signage overhang
The Nevada Department of Transportation has proposed a change to the signage overhang near Haggen’s parking lot.
Boulder City Chamber of Commerce members have been asked for their immediate input by NDOT.
Public Works Director Scott Hansen has offered to accept feedback on the proposed new wording of the sign.
According to NDOT’s release, Boulder City Pkwy will be added to the left side of the sign, while Historic District and Nevada Way will be added to the right.
All input should be submitted to Hansen by Oct. 27 at 12 p.m.
