Park Service seeks comment on Boulder City bypass

The National Park Service seeks public comment on a proposal to relocate a utility line and create a temporary water line at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The changes are needed to accommodate the Boulder City bypass project.

Though construction of the bypass was approved in 2005, the project’s environmental impact statement did not address the need to move a portion of an existing power line or install a pipeline to provide water, representative Christie Vanover said. An environmental assessment has been prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

The proposed bypass would force the relocation of approximately 1 mile of transmission line and the installation of a temporary above-ground waterline from Lake Mead to provide water for construction.

The document is available for review at area libraries and online at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/. Comments may be submitted electronically via the website. Written comments should be mailed to Lake Mead NRA, Compliance Office, 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City, NV 89005.

Comments must be received by Sept. 19.

California man missing in Lake Mohave, officials say

A search is underway for a 31-year-old Southern California man who went missing Saturday afternoon near Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave.

Park officials received a call about a man who jumped off a boat into the water, National Park Service representative Christie Vanover said. The man then began to struggle and was last seen going underwater. Witnesses said he was not wearing a life jacket.

National Park Service rangers, Nevada Department of Wildlife game wardens and employees from the nearby marina immediately began searching for the man who is believed to be about 100 yards from the shoreline, Vanover said. The area is 80 to 100 feet deep. Because of recent storms, visibility is limited, making the search more challenging, she said.

Crews are continuing to search the area. The incident is under investigation.
