Prescribed burn set for Tuesday at St. Thomas
The National Park Service will burn 8 acres in the historic town of St. Thomas this month to help control exotic tamarisk vegetation.
This vegetation has aggressively invaded the area and is being removed to protect the natural and cultural resources in the area.
The burn date is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday but may change, depending on weather conditions. For public safety, access to St. Thomas will be closed at this time.
Historic foundations and tree stumps will be protected, and the burn will be monitored by a member of the resource management division to ensure that no nesting threatened or endangered bird species are present.
Visitors near the area, especially along Northshore Road, may see smoke during the burn. Smoke should last only a short time and is not expected to cause health or safety concerns.
