One man died and more than 15 others were rescued in separate incidents over the weekend at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
A 30-year-old man from Mexico City was killed in an apparent motor vehicle accident Sunday, according to Christie Vanover of the National Park Service. Lake Mead officials received a call from a visitor who came across the unresponsive man near a vehicle around Mile Marker 20 on Northshore Road, Vanover said.
Park Service rangers and the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to the scene and saw the man, who appeared to be involved in a single-car accident, officials said.
The man, according to officials, was not wearing a seat belt. They also believe speed was a factor. The victim will be identified by the Clark County coroner’s office when next of kin have been notified.
A 12-year-old boy is in critical condition after nearly drowning at Cottonwood East on Lake Mohave in Arizona Sunday.
Lake Mead officials received a call about 2:20 p.m. about a boy who almost drowned before visitors provided life-saving care. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office located them en route to the hospital about 3 p.m. and began providing care for the boy, who was in critical condition, Vanover said.
He was transported to Kingman, Ariz., and was later flown to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. The boy was not wearing a life jacket.
Other incidents at the recreation area include:
n A 5-year old girl was rescued from almost drowning at Special Events Beach on Lake Mead Sunday. She was transported to the hospital in fair condition.
n A 23-year-old man was rescued along Gold Strike Canyon Trail Sunday night after an injury during his hike, according to Vanover. He was transported to the hospital in an unknown condition.
