Body found at Lake Mead
Park rangers discovered a body early May 22 at Lake Mead near Castle Reef.
The Clark County coroner identified the victim as Edwin Vivas, a 45-year-old Henderson man who was reported missing at Lake Mead on May 10, according to National Park Service spokeswoman Christie Vanover. His death has been ruled an accident.
Witnesses said the man was swimming and began to struggle about 4:30 p.m. before he went missing. He was not wearing a life jacket.
The National Park Service, Nevada Wildlife Department and volunteers from Earth Resource Group looked for Vivas for two weeks.
A man who died at Lake Mead National Recreation Area on May 18 has been identified by the Clark County coroner.
Javier Velazquez-Montiel, 30, was killed in an apparent car accident, according to Vanover. Lake Mead officials received a call from a visitor who came across the unresponsive man near a vehicle around Mile Marker 20 on Northshore Road, Vanover said.
Park Service rangers and the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
Velazquez-Montiel appeared to be involved in a single-car accident, officials said.
Student race car team places ninth at nationals
Boulder City High School’s Ten80 Student Racing Challenge: NASCAR STEM Initiative team placed ninth in the national competition May 17 in Charlotte, N.C.
The challenge, which incorporated science, technology, engineering and mathematics principles, required team members to create and race a scale NASCAR vehicle. In addition, they designed a tool for changing tires and developed an alternative energy source to power their vehicle.
Those traveling to the competition were Conner Armstrong, Jarid Bell, Weston Little and Teagan Smale. Rodney Ball and Charlene Wiesenborn, who teach auto shop and science, respectively, served as advisers.
This was the first time Boulder City had a team in the challenge, Wiesenborn said, noting it would not be the last.
“The kids were really excited. They do plan to compete next year and know what they need to do to improve,” she said.
They competed in seven of nine categories and placed fifth in the visual design phase for their team and car graphics.
Wiesenborn said she was really happy with their results, especially since they were vying primarily against students from magnet and technical academy students from 26 other schools.
Early voting today, Friday at City Hall
Residents of Boulder City can vote early for the June election today and Friday at City Hall, 401 California Ave.
Early voting will take place in the council chambers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.
Voters will be casting ballots in a variety of judicial races, and for several Clark County positions including sheriff, county clerk and county recorder.
High school graduation set for June 5
Boulder City High School will graduate the Class of 2014 at 7:30 p.m. June 5 at the football field at the school, 1101 Fifth St.
Tickets are required. Each graduate is given 10 tickets for family and friends.
