As Lake Mead National Recreation Area continues its observance of National Park Week, several special events and activities have been planned for visitors through Sunday.
This year’s theme, “Go Wild!” encourages visitors to discover the diverse wildlife, iconic landscapes, vibrant culture and rich history that encompass our national parks.
Below are some events happening at Lake Mead:
n Junior Ranger Day, Saturday: Families are invited to bring their kids to the Boulder Beach Picnic Area between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be free activities and demonstrations for people of all ages at various activity stations that focus on animals, plants and cultural artifacts.
Each child will have the opportunity to earn a badge and be sworn in as a Junior Ranger. Touch live reptiles, meet Smokey Bear, Mojave Max and Coastie (a talking robot boat), all during the event. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
n Watercolor Class, Saturday and Sunday: Donald Davidson is a known watercolor artist who paints the plants of national parks across the U.S. Sponsored by Lake Mead Institute and Western National Parks Association, this workshop will allow participants to see how Davidson works through the intricate process of recording beauty with paint and brush.
This is a two-day workshop; some supplies will be provided. The fee is $85 per person, for both days. Registration is required and space is limited. For more information and registration, call the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 702-293-8990.
