With the filing period for Boulder City’s upcoming municipal election still a few days away, three people have already announced their intention to seek one of the three open positions on the City Council.
Voters will be electing a new mayor and two City Council members. Councilman Rod Woodbury has announced his intention to seek the mayor’s spot and vacate his current position.
Mayor Roger Tobler is prohibited from running again because of term limits. In February, the state Supreme Court clarified a section of the Nevada Constitution that was deemed ambiguous about 12-year term limits for state offices and local governing bodies.
The decision affects Boulder City, where the city charter defines the mayor as a member of the council, City Attorney Dave Olsen said at the time.
Tobler served one four-year term on the council, 2003-07, and is nearing the end of his second four-year term as mayor.
Councilwoman Peggy Leavitt, who was elected in 2011, will seek re-election.
Also planning to run for one of the two council seats is Boulder City resident Rich Shuman.
The filing period for the April 7 primary opens Tuesday. Candidates will have until Feb. 5 to file papers, which are available at the city clerk’s office.
If there are two or less candidates for mayor and four or less candidates for City Council, the city will not hold a primary and will wait until June 2 when the general municipal election is scheduled.
