Area children are likely to get a little wet looking for their Easter treasures this year.
For the first time, the Boulder City Swimming Pool is presenting an Easter Pool Plunge and inviting area children to get into the water and search for treasure-filled Easter eggs.
The plunge will be held at 2 p.m. March 12 at the municipal pool, 861 Avenue B.
The new event is just one of several the staff at the aquatic center hopes to add to the annual calendar.
“We are looking to increase the number of special events we host,” said Cheree Brennan, assistant aquatics coordinator at the Boulder City pool.
Brennan said she had done this type of event when she was working at the Air Force base in Mountain Home, Idaho, and it was well received.
The Easter Pool Plunge is exactly like a typical Easter egg hunt, except that it is held in the pool.
Brennan said the goal is to completely submerge the plastic eggs in the water, “hence the pool plunge name.” Realistically, she said she hopes to get at least most of them to sink.
“It always depends on the eggs themselves,” she said.
The egg hunts will be divided into various age groups with prizes split accordingly.
In addition to plastic eggs filled with prizes, there will be a few floating toys such as small beach balls during each group’s plunge.
Brennan said there also will be some special eggs that will be designated for larger prizes.
Participants are asked to bring waterproof baskets to hold their eggs or plastic bags.
Nonswimmers can be accompanied by an adult.
Brennan said she expects the plunge to attract between 50-75 participants.
“Because it is a first-time event, I’m not sure how many people we will have,” she said. “I don’t expect as many as for the Fourth of July coin toss because that is a long-running, anticipated event.”
For the plunge, the water temperature of the pool will be around 85 degrees.
Although geared primarily for those 12 and younger, Brennan said anyone can participate in the plunge.
Cost is $2 per participant.
