Volunteers are the lifeblood of any nonprofit and Lend A Hand of Boulder City thanked the 80 volunteers who help keep the organization running by throwing its 27th annual volunteer dinner at Railroad Pass on Nov. 10.
“This is the one time of year that we say thank you to all the volunteers who make our work possible,” said Christina Lodge, director of Lend A Hand. “It was a wonderful event this year in celebration of a great group of people.”
Mayor Rod Woodbury and Councilwoman Peggy Leavitt attended the event, with Woodbury making an official proclamation that Nov. 10 would be Lend A Hand day in Boulder City.
“For 27 years Lend A Hand staff and volunteers have helped seniors and handicapped clients remain in their own homes by providing companionship, in-home services, respite for caregivers and transportation to and from appointments and errands,” Woodbury said reading the proclamation. “I am hereby declaring that Nov. 10 is Lend A Hand day.”
Lend A Hand hosted a dinner for all volunteers because it prefers to praise the achievements of the entire organization instead of singling out individuals.
“Our volunteers in general do a great service in the background and they don’t want a lot of attention so we just throw a party in honor of everyone,” Lodge said. “Without our volunteers many of the seniors we help would not be able to make their doctors’ appointments.”
The event was supported by multiple businesses in Boulder City that provided food, gifts and entertainment. Railroad Pass helped coordinate the party and catered the event. Fox Smokehouse BBQ and Boulder Pit Stop provided gift certificates to their restaurants.
Milo’s Cellar offered free nights at its inn for some volunteers. Fisher Space Pen donated a number of pens and Attractions Salon also donated gift certificates.
The night didn’t end with the organization getting its own day; those in attendance also were treated to a musical performance by Leon Gilliam, who performed with The Buck Ram Platters, singing songs of the original group that was popular in the 1950s.
“Leon always gets us singing and dancing,” Lodge said. “We have had him perform three years in a row now and we love it every time.”
