American Legion to hear of veterans benefits Tuesday

 

American Legion, Post 31 in Boulder City, will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the post, 508 California Ave.

Guest speaker will be Ben Jefferson Jr. of the Nevada Department of Veterans Services. He will be discussing benefits for veterans in the state.

Library schedules activities, movies

 

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. These include:

Odd Squad reading camp, 10 a.m. today in the community room. Join Vegas PBS for the four-week camp. For those ages 5-9.

Movie, 1 p.m. today in the community room. “To Hell and Back” starring Audie Murphy will be shown. Bring blankets and snacks.

Lego challenge, 3:30 p.m. today in the community room. The session is designed for those 6 and older.

“I Survived” book club, 3:30 p.m. Friday in the board room. Participants are asked to read “I Survived: The Japanese Tsunami, 2011” by Lauren Tarshis before attending. The session will include a discussion, activity and craft related to the book.

Teen and adult craft, 1 p.m. Saturday in the community room. Quick T-shirt crafts will be presented. For those 12 and older. Reservations and a $5 refundable deposit are required.

Teen movie, 2 p.m. Monday in the community room. “Maleficent” will be shown. Bring blankets and snacks.

Preschool story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For children 3-5.

Family movie, 11 a.m. Tuesday in the community room. “Despicable Me” will be shown. Bring blankets and snacks.

Family movie, 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the community room. “Despicable Me 2” will be shown. Bring blankets and snacks.

Teen movie, 5 p.m. Tuesday in the community room. “Seventh Son” will be shown. Bring blankets and snacks.

Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months.

Hero club, 3 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. This week’s theme is hero training. For those 4-11 years old.

The summer reading program ends Aug. 6. Log cards and reading entries must be submitted by 7 p.m.

Note, the library will be closed Sundays through Labor Day.

Full moon hike, geology lesson scheduled at Lake Mead

 

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events in the coming weeks. These include:

Ranger program: Full moon hike, Friday. Join rangers from the Lake Mead Institute to watch the full moon appear over the mountains and learn about some constellations. Hike along the Historic Railroad Trail. Not recommended for children younger than 10 because of the hiking distance. Reservations required.

Ranger chat, “Lake Mead Rocks — Geology 101,” 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center. Learn how the landscape of the recreation area has changed over millions of years from tropical shallow seas to fiery volcanoes.
