Highway art topic for museum’s monthly program
Lucy Joyce from the Nevada Department of Transportation will discuss highway art at the monthly Third Thursday at the Museum program at 6 tonight inside the Segerblom Theatre at the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum, 1305 Arizona St.
Joyce is NDOT’s landscape architect supervisor and helped launch the landscape and aesthetics program. She will discuss plans for the two phases of construction for the Boulder City bypass.

Program about suicide prevention on tap at hospital
Boulder City Hospital Foundation will present a suicide prevention program at 7 tonight in the training room at the hospital, 901 Adams Blvd.

Las Vegas councilman to speak at Republican’s meeting
The Boulder City Republican Women’s Club will hold its monthly meeting at 11 a.m. today at the Railroad Pass, 2800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson.
Guest speaker will be Bob Beers, a Las Vegas councilman who plans to run for the U.S. Senate in 2016.

Library schedules variety of activities, events
Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. These include:
n Teen Advisory Group, 1 p.m. Saturday in the community room. For those 12-18. Participants will help decide what materials the library should purchase, design programs for teenagers and help maintain a new website for teens.
n Preschool story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the boardroom. For children 3-5 and their caregivers.
n Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the boardroom. For children younger than 36 months.
n Science Exploration Club, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in the boardroom. Explore science through stories, experiments and crafts. For children 3-6.
n Teen and adult craft, 6 p.m. Jan. 26 in the community room. Participants will make a book page wall art mosaic. For those 12 and older. Reservations and a $5 refundable deposit are required.

Emergency preparedness is topic for Retired Public Employees
The Boulder City chapter of the Retired Public Employees of Nevada will hold its monthly meeting at 11 a.m. Jan. 22 at The Homestead of Boulder City, 1401 Medical Park Drive.
Guest speaker will be Henderson emergency management officer Yuri Graves, who will discuss emergency preparedness.

Coalition to make plans for upcoming weeklong event
Nevada Community Prevention Coalition will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 28 at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. During the session, plans will be discussed for a weeklong event slated April 6-10 to spread positive messages throughout the city.
Myriad special events on tap at Lake Mead recreation area
Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming weeks. These include:
n Ranger program, 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center. “The Mojave Desert: A Magical Land” will focus on the animals and plants found in the desert.
n Sunset sing-along, 4 p.m. Saturday at the Boulder Beach amphitheater. Join Mike Kershaw, who will play the guitar and lead participants in familiar children’s songs, popular songs and some original pieces.
n Free entrance, Monday. Entrance fees to the recreation area will be waived for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Fees for camping, lake use and concessions apply.

Therapist to address members of widows’ support group
Anew Women’s Network will meet at 2 p.m. Jan. 24 at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. Special speaker for the session will be Merlelynn Harris, a licensed marriage and family therapist from Harris Counseling.
The group is for widows; it meets the fourth Saturday of each month to provide encouragement, friendship and information.

Red Mountain Choir to begin rehearsals for spring concert
Red Mountain Choir will hold rehearsals for its spring concert, “Masquerade,” from 7-9 p.m. every Thursday starting Feb. 5. Rehearsals will be held at the Elaine K. Smith Center, 700 Wyoming St.
The choir will perform April 17 and 18.
Anyone 15 and older who enjoys singing is welcome to participate.

Artist/naturalist to help lead trip through Grand Canyon
Boulder City resident and artist/naturalist Sharon Schafer will join University of Nevada, Las Vegas geologist and professor Peg Rees in a weeklong exploratory rafting trip of the Grand Canyon. The eight-day trip is presented by the university’s continuing education program and facilitated by a National Park Service concessionaire.
Participants will travel about 200 miles and learn about the area’s natural and cultural history and geologic evolution.There will be short hikes each day to explore the region’s river, waterfalls and caverns. Nights will be spent camping along the river.
The trip begins with a bus trip to a hotel near Marble Canyon, where participants will spend the night before starting the raft trip. After the journey, the group will travel by helicopter from Whitmore Wash to the canyon’s rim and catch a plane back to Las Vegas.
The course/trip is scheduled July 20-27 and costs $3,295 (double occupancy tent). An $825 deposit will hold a spot until March 10, when the remaining fee is due.
The fee includes round-trip transportation, one-night hotel lodging, all meals and beverages while on the river (except for sodas and alcohol), two-person tents, all camping gear and dry bags.
