Chocolate, wine tasting to aid scholarship fund
The American Association of University Women will hold its semiannual chocolate and wine tasting Saturday at the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St. The festivities are scheduled from 6-9 p.m. and will benefit the group’s scholarship fund.
Tickets are $10 and include an engraved wine glass. They can be purchased at the hotel.
Retired Public Employees’ monthly meeting set
The Boulder City Chapter of the Retired Public Employees of Nevada will hold its monthly meeting at 11 a.m. today at The Homestead of Boulder City, 1401 Medical Park Drive.
During the session, members will hear about candidate interviews held in August. They also will discuss Tuesday’s annual conference at the Hacienda.
A no-host lunch at a local restaurant will follow the meeting.

Community blood drive scheduled for today
A Boulder City community and Boulder City Hospital blood drive will be held from 1-7 p.m. today in the chapel gym at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 916 Fifth St.

Republican Women to gather for luncheon today
The Boulder City Republican Women’s Club will have its monthly meeting today in the banquet room at the Railroad Pass Casino, 2800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. Guest speakers will be Ron Knecht, state controller candidate, and judicial candidates on the November ballot.
Doors will open at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m.

State race, judicial candidates to attend forum
More than a dozen candidates for statewide offices and judicial positions are expected to attend a forum from 6-9 p.m. today at the Multipurpose Building, 1204 Sixth St.
The judge positions are nonpartisan races and local residents are invited to meet these candidates and speak with them on a one-on-one basis. Additionally, each candidate will be given several minutes to speak to the audience.
Those expected to attend are Erin Bilbray, Congressional District 3; Robert “Bob” Goodman, candidate for governor; Mary Beth Scow, Clark County Commission District G; Andrew Martin, controller; district court candidates Carolyn Ellsworth, Department 5; Christine Guerci-Nyhus, Department 8; Nicholas Perrino, Department 20; Jim Crockett, Department 24; and Jeffrey Rugg, Department 30; and district court family division candidates Rebecca Burton, Department C; Denise Gentile, Department F; Cheryl Moss and Travis Shetler, Department I; Monti Jordana Levy, Department N; and Lisa Brown, Department T.

Dogs invited to participate in Bark for Life relay
Boulder City United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society will sponsor Bark for Life, an event that encourages families to bring their canine companions to walk with them to raise funds to find a cure for cancer.
The walk will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Veterans’ Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd.
A miniature version of the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life, the event will include an opening ceremony, survivors’ lap for canine and human cancer survivors, costume contest for dogs and owner-dog look-alike contest. The contests are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and will be judged by Mayor Roger Tobler and Judge Victor Miller.
Also on tap will be fly ball and flying disc demonstrations at 9:30 a.m by Silver Stars and at 10:30 a.m. by Atomic Dogs, respectively. The event will include music, food booths and information from local animal service providers.
Registration is $20 per dog and includes a Bark for Life bandana and bag filled with canine treats and offers.

Lend A Hand offering seminar about diabetes
Lend A Hand is hosting a free seminar for diabetics at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.
The St. Rose Dominican Hospital’s diabetes team will present a program that was developed by the Stanford School of Medicine for people with Type 2 diabetes to complement their current medical treatment. There will be handouts and information on all the diabetic programs the hospital offers.
There also will be information available from Boulder City Hospital on their diabetic programs.

Community Club to kick off season with lunch
The Community Club will hold its annual kickoff luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at Vinny’s Pizza, 1632 Nevada Highway. Support group for widows to begin Sept. 27
A community group, Anew Women’s Network, is forming for women whose husbands have died. It will hold its first meeting at 2 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Assembly of God Church, 1100 Adams Blvd. Offering support and friendship, the group will continue to meet on the fourth Saturday of each month.

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. These include:
■ Science Exploration Club, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. Explore science through stories, experiments and crafts. For children 3-6.
n Movie, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the community room. “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be shown in honor of banned books week. Snacks and drinks are permitted.
■ Tech teacher, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday. Stop at the reference desk and sign up for a 45-minute one-on-one tutoring session with the library’s technology specialist. A $5 refundable deposit is required.
■ Craft hour, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the community room.
■ Lego challenge, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Sept. 25 in the community room. The session is designed for those 6 and older.
■ Craft, Oct. 4. Make apples, pumpkins and vases out of books. Reservations and a $5 refundable deposit are required. The registration deadline is 8:30 p.m. Oct. 1.

Cheer program on tap at recreation center
Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department is offering a cheerleading program for children in kindergarten and older. It meets from 6-7 p.m. Fridays in at the recreation center, 900 Arizona St.
Participants will learn teamwork, skills for tryouts and basic techniques. Sandi Wachtel is teaching the course.
The group will participate in Santa’s Electric Light Parade Dec. 6. Children must take the Nov. 7 to Dec. 5 session to be in the parade and there is a $25 uniform fee.
The fee is $27 for the months of September, October and February; $36 for January and $45 for November and December.
Additionally, a cheer camp is planned for 8-10 a.m. Oct. 31 with a performance at 10 a.m. The cost is $18.

American Legion breakfast served Thursday mornings
All veterans and their families are invited to the American Legion’s varied menu breakfast from 6-8:30 a.m. Thursdays at the American Legion Hall, 508 California Way, between Boulder Bowl and Grace Christian Academy. There is no cost to attend, but donations are welcome.
Legionnaires and eligible veterans are invited to the American Legion meeting at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the hall.
