Art show, lecture to mark start of Wilderness Act
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act with an art show and lecture at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center at Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
Nevada artist and naturalist Sharon Schafer will showcase the hidden beauty and grace of Southern Nevada’s wilderness areas through a multimedia program of music, stories, art and photographs.
Schafer’s varied background ranges from being a painter and a photographer to a wildlife biologist and a river guide. Her work reflects her vision of a land of great beauty and little rain where its wild inhabitants, large and small, are worthy of respect and honor.
The lecture and art show are free but you must register by calling 702-293-8990. Artwork will be available for purchase at the event.
Classic car show on tap Saturday in downtown park
Boulder City Cruisin’ Association, in conjunction with Tuckers Classic Auto Parks, will present its Fall Classic Custom and Rods show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in Bicentennial Park, 999 Colorado St.
The event, open to all makes and models, will feature a car show, automotive swap meet, vendor marketplace, and live DJ.

Democratic Club to discuss election at meeting
The Boulder City Democratic Club will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. A representative from the Consolidated Campaign will discuss organizing for the November election.

Community blood drive scheduled for Sept. 18
A Boulder City community and Boulder City Hospital blood drive will be 1-7 p.m. Sept. 18 in the chapel gym at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 916 Fifth St.

Sewing group to resume weekly sessions Sept. 15
The sewing groups that meets at Hope Church, 850 Avenue B, will start its fall classes Sept. 15. They will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. each week on Mondays.
Those who already have sewing projects or equipment are welcome to bring them. If not, the instructors have projects planned.
Each session will begin with a short devotional from the book “Life of a Jesus Follower.”
All are welcome; enter at the back of the church. There is no cost to participate.
Republican Women to gather for luncheon Sept. 18
The Boulder City Republican Women’s Club will have its monthly meeting Sept. 18 in the banquet room at the Railroad Pass Casino, 2800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. Guest speakers will be judicial candidates on the November ballot.
Doors will open at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m.

Dogs invited to participate in Bark for Life relay
Boulder City United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society will sponsor Bark for Life, an event that encourages families to bring their canine companions to walk with them to raise funds to find a cure for cancer.
The walk will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at Veterans’ Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd.
A miniature version of the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life, the event will include an opening ceremony, survivors’ lap for canine and human cancer survivors, costume contest for dogs and owner-dog look-alike contest.
There also will be music, food booths and information from local animal service providers.
Registration is $20 per dog and includes a Bark for Life bandana and bag filled with canine treats and offers.

Walking group meets at Veterans Park
Boulder City United Methodist Fellowship has a walking group that meets at 8 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Veterans’ Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd. Group members walk 30 minutes before they begin their day. The Boulder City Writers Group meets from 7-8:20 p.m. each Thursday in the community room at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.
Writers of all levels are welcome to learn more about writing and receive feedback on their work.

American Legion breakfast served Thursday mornings
All veterans and their families are invited to the American Legion’s varied menu breakfast from 6-8:30 a.m. Thursdays at the American Legion Hall, 508 California Way, between Boulder Bowl and Grace Christian Academy. There is no cost to attend, but donations are welcome.
Legionnaires and eligible veterans are invited to the American Legion meeting at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the hall.

Local churches join for weekday worship
Boulder City United Methodist Church and St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church offer a weekly worship called WOW or “Worship on Wednesday.” The 6:45 p.m. worship service is at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 812 Arizona St., and is a combination of contemporary praise music, prayer and a short reflection.
The Revs. Sandy Johnson and Jim Lyons lead the service, with music by Francyl Gawryn.
