University Women to begin season with brunch

American Association of University Women, Boulder City Branch, invites interested women to a new season brunch at 11 a.m. Saturday to learn about the association and its activities.

The group annually hosts a home tour and chocolate and wine tasting fundraisers.

The brunch will be at The Restaurant at Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

Lend A Hand to present veterans benefits workshop

A workshop about veterans benefits will be presented at 3 p.m. Tuesday by Lend A Hand. The session, “Protecting Yourself From the Costs of Long-term Care,” will be at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

Kim Boyer, a certified elder law and Veterans Affairs accredited attorney, will present the workshop. Topics include aid and attendance, the application process and how this benefit can help defray costs of assisted living and long-term care. Additionally, she will discuss advanced planning to help with eligibility, how an irrevocable trust can offer protection and new laws that make it more difficult to safeguard one’s assets.

The class will count as a retraining for Lend A Hand volunteers.

Wine walk, movies in park on tap Saturday

Boulder City Chamber of Commerce will present a wine walk and movies in the park Saturday.

The wine walk, held in the city’s downtown district, is 4 to 7 p.m. Participants start at the chamber office, 465 Nevada Way, where tasting glasses may be purchased and a map of locations obtained. The cost is $25 per person or $45 per couple.

At 7 p.m. in Bicentennial Park, 400 Colorado St., “Fast and Furious 6” will be shown. There is no cost to attend and participants are invited to bring chairs or blankets.

Democratic Club’s monthly meeting set for Aug. 14

The Boulder City Democratic Club will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14, at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

The Nevada Coalition Against the Death Penalty will present the evening’s program. A discussion will follow the presentation.

Calvary Chapel to present young women’s conference

Calvary Chapel is presenting a young women’s conference from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 16 at its church, 1000 Nevada Way, behind Nevada State Bank.

The conference will feature testimonies from women who have experienced a range of difficult and painful situations including abuse, addiction, attempted suicide and abortion. They will discuss how they found themselves in those situations and how God helped them out and changed their lives. The day will include worship, lunch and a raffle.

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. These include:

n Martha Speaks Reading Buddies, 10 a.m. today in the community room. Vegas PBS presents the program to teach new words. The summer program for those 4-8 concludes today.

n Family movie, 2 p.m. today in the community room. “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” will be shown. Bring blankets, comfortable seating and snacks.

n Teen astronomy fun: Saturn Lord of the Rings, 10 a.m. Friday in the community room. For those 10 and older. Las Vegas Astronomical Society will present the program.

n Science Exploration Club, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Friday in the board room. Explore science through stories, experiments and crafts. For children 3-6.

n Summer reading program book sale, 3-7 p.m. Monday in the community room.

n Preschool story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For children 3-5 and their caregivers.

n Tech teacher, 9 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. By appointment only; reservations must be made by 8:30 p.m. Monday. Learn about your new electronic device in a 45-minute session. There is a $5 refundable deposit required.

n Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months.

n Banned book club, 3-4 p.m. Wednesday in the board room. For those 12 and older.

n Family story time, 6 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. There will be science, crafts, games, Legos and stories.

Lions invite prospective members to meeting

The Boulder City Lions Club is seeking civic-minded men and women who are interested in making a difference in the community. The club is hosting an information session at 6 p.m. Aug. 20 in the clubhouse at Red Mountain RV Resort, 1010 Industrial Road.

“Our club gives members an opportunity to advance worthy causes, serve with friends, and become leaders in the community. This club means a lot to our Lions, but it means so much more to the people we serve,” President Linda Stocker said.

The Lions’ motto is “We Serve,” and for 25 years the Boulder City club has provided eye exams and glasses, hearing aids for those who could not purchase them, hosted charity golf tournaments, held speakers’ contests for area youth, and raised funds for charities through food sales at the Spring Jamboree and Damboree.

Refreshments will be served at the meeting. Reservations are requested by Aug. 14 and can be made by calling Stocker at 702-824-2441.

American Legion seeks preferences for blood drive

The American Legion of Boulder City is planning to hold a blood drive in September or October. To determine the best day and time for the event, post members are requesting that interested donors contact them by telephone at 702-293-6374 or email at BCPost31@embarqmail.com to state their preferences.

In addition to stating what time or date would be ideal for making blood donations, the post is asking potential donors provide their name and contact information.

Host families for exchange students sought

Host families are being sought for the fall semester and full school year for students between the ages of 15 and 18 who will be visiting the U.S. from around the world.

Host families serve as mentors and a home base for the students, who become members of the family and integrate into their hosts’ routines and traditions.

“Every year the state of Nevada plays host to talented, top-of-their-class students with the lifelong dream of studying in America,” said Darlene Benjamin, iE-USA’s area director. “Nevada’s spirit of hospitality and focus on academic enrichment makes it an ideal environment to develop cultural exchange and promote international diplomacy on a local level.”

IE-USA, the sponsoring program, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting education and understanding through intercultural and academic exchange. IE-USA is certified by the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel and strictly adheres to all U.S.State Department Student Exchange Program regulations and guidelines.

Exchange student participants undergo an extensive application and orientation process in their home country before being accepted into iE-USA’s program. Each student is responsible for his or her spending money and full health insurance coverage.

Hospital auxiliary seeks volunteers

Volunteers are needed to work in Goldies’ Gift Shoppe and in long-term care at Boulder City Hospital.

Anyone interested should contact the Boulder City Hospital Auxiliary by calling the hospital gift shop at 702-293-4111, visiting the gift shop or downloading an application on the auxiliary’s page on the hospital’s website at bchcares.org.

Writers group meets every Thursday at library

The Boulder City Writers Group meets from 7-8:20 p.m. each Thursday in the community room at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

Writers of all levels are welcome to attend to learn more about writing and receive feedback on their work.

American Legion breakfast served Thursday mornings

All veterans and their families are invited to the American Legion’s varied menu breakfast from 6-8:30 a.m. Thursdays at the American Legion Hall, 508 California Way, between Boulder Bowl and Grace Christian Academy. There is no cost to attend, but donations are welcome.

Legionnaires and eligible veterans are invited to the American Legion meeting at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the hall.

Support group helps family of those with breathing problems

Area residents are invited to the Friends and Family of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease support group. The group meets at 10 a.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the Senior Center, 813 Arizona St.

Bruce Borchard of Vital Care leads the group, which explores ways for better living with COPD, asthma and emphysema. It is sanctioned by the Better Breathers and American Lung Association.

Support groups help with memory loss, dementia

The Homestead at Boulder City is offering its Alzheimer’s support group, memory loss support group and dementia workshops on the third Thursday of each month. The groups will meet in the library at The Homestead, 1401 Medical Park Drive.

The Alzheimer’s group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; the memory loss group meets from 1-2 p.m.

There is no cost for these workshops and refreshments will be served. Those attending are welcome to bring a loved one, who will be cared for during the meeting.
