Retired Public Employees to hear Bilbray, Heck aide

The Boulder City Chapter of the Retired Public Employees of Nevada will hold its May meeting at 11 a.m. today at The Homestead of Boulder City, 1401 Medical Park Drive. Guest speakers will be Erin Bilbray, candidate for U.S. Congress in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District and a representative from Congressman Joe Heck’s staff to present their positions and answer questions.

A no-host lunch at an area restaurant will follow the meeting. All public employees, working or retired, are welcome to join.

The club will not meet in June, July and August.

Art Scape to unveil new statues during walking tour

Boulder City Public Art Scape will present its eighth annual Walk-Around and Meet the Artists event at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Participants will meet at the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

Nine of the 12 artists whose work will be displayed in the coming year will be on hand to speak about their work and answer questions. A reception will follow the guided tour.

Country Store rummage sale planned May 31 for church

Country Store plans a summer sale from 7 a.m. to noon May 31 on the campus of Grace Community Church, 1150 Wyoming St.

The sale will feature a variety of used housewares, hardware and furniture.

Grace Community Church has sponsors the rummage sales known as Country Store to raise money for church projects and Christian missions for 66 years.

The summer sale was started in recent years because the volume of items donated for the fall event overflowed from the church’s storage area.

The 67th Country Store in the fall will be held Oct. 17 and 18.

Puttin’ 4 the Kids school fundraiser planned May 31

Puttin’ 4 the Kids, an annual golf fundraiser to benefit before and after school programs for local children, will be held May 31 at Boulder City Municipal Golf Course, 1 Clubhouse Drive.

It is being presented by Jack’s Place Sports Bar in conjunction with the Dan Leach Foundation. Tournament registration is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.

The individual entry fee is $100, which includes the green fee, a cart and barbecue lunch. A variety of sponsorships are available.

Lend A Hand forum focuses on caregivers, resources

Lend A Hand is sponsoring a Caregivers Forum, presented by the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, at 3 p.m. June 10 at the library, 701 Adams Blvd.

Those attending will learn about the social services and educational programs available free to caregivers at the center, the opportunity to participate in research as well as other available resources. The facility focuses on caregivers and families in addition to those with neurocognitive disorders.

The forum is open to the public and will count as an annual retraining class for Lend A Hand volunteers. There is no charge to attend.

Lend A Hand helps senior, disabled and handicapped residents of Boulder City, driving them to appointments across the Las Vegas Valley and providing help, respite and companionship to help them remain in their homes.

It is in the midst of a fundraising nonevent, inviting local residents to stay at home in their pajamas and send donations by check or online.

Library schedules variety of activities, events for families

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. They include:

n Volunteer opportunities, 3 p.m. today in the community room. An informational session for those 12-17 who would like to volunteer at the library for the summer reading program.

n Movie, 1 p.m. Saturday in the community room. The 1998 version of “The Parent Trap” will be shown. Bring blankets and snacks.

n Preschool storytime, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For children 3-5 and their caregivers.

n Toddler storytime, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 3 years.

n Movie, 9:30 a.m. May 29 in the community room. “Jailhouse Rock” will be shown. Bring blankets and snacks.

n Computer class, 1:30-2:30 p.m. May 29. An introduction to Facebook will be presented. Class size is limited to five people.

n Lego challenge, 4-5 p.m. May 29 in the community room. The session is designed for those 6 or older.

n Summer Reading Program kickoff, 11 a.m. June 5 in the community room. Mad Science representatives will be on hand to transform laboratory science into a fun learning experience.

Community blood drive planned May 29 at church

The Boulder City Community blood drive will be held from 1-7 p.m. May 29 in the gymnasium at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 916 Fifth St.

Weekly summer basketball camp planned at rec center

The Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department is presenting a youth basketball summer camp for children in grades 2-8.

The camp will focus on basketball fundamentals, as well as provide time to play.

Jim Konst, head girls basketball coach at Garrett Junior High, will teach the summer camp.

The session is scheduled from 2-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the gym at the recreation center, 900 Arizona St. Cost is $15 weekly or $5 a day.

Parks department schedules summer program for children

Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department is offering children in kindergarten through fifth grade a fun playground program this summer. Summer Parks will include activities such as field trips, arts and crafts, games, sports and special events.

The summer program begins June 9 and continues through Aug. 22. The cost is $9 for a half day or $18 for a full day.

Performance class for kids planned at ABC Park center

A performance class for children ages 7-10 is being offered at the ABC Park art center.

Classes will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The first session will be held June 10 through July 10, with a final performance for family and friends at 11:30 a.m. July 10. The cost is $150.

The second session is scheduled from July 29 through Aug. 21, with a final performance at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 21. The fee is $120.

The classes will be taught by Francyl Gawryn, music director, and Linda Nations, theater director.

Gawryn’s resume includes time as music director for Youth Theater Northwest in Seattle, a music instructor for preschool, elementary school students and youths, and as a professional singer and composer.

Nations has served as director of children’s theater, Kirk of Kildare, in Cary, N.C., and as an environmental educator for elementary school students and youths.

Hospital auxiliary seeks volunteers for gift shop, care

Volunteers are needed to work in Goldies’ Gift Shoppe and in long-term care at Boulder City Hospital.

Dog obedience class being offered by parks department

A dog obedience class is being offered by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. A new session will begin July 14.

The six-week course is designed for those 10 or older, with children 10-14 requiring an adult to participate. It will teach five basic obedience commands.

Classes will be from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in the multiuse building at Broadbent Park, 1204 Sixth St. Dogs should not be brought to the first session.

The cost is $50.

Participants must bring motivational treats and a 15-foot leash.

Registration underway at Grace Christian Academy

Registration for the 2014-2015 school year at Grace Christian Academy is underway in the school office.

A $140 nonrefundable registration fee as well as a copy of the child’s birth certificate and immunization record are required.

Half-day and full-day kindergarten classes are offered.

To complement the school’s core curriculum, specialty classes include art, physical education, music, music theory, explorations, and technology classes.

Lake Mead experiences temporary closure

Portions of Wetland Trail in Lake Mead National Recreation Area are temporarily closed through June 30 during the construction of a grade control structure in the Lower Las Vegas Wash.

The trail head and parking area on Northshore Road along with adjacent areas will be closed to access, hiking and other recreational uses.

The grade control structure will reduce erosion in the Las Vegas Wash to protect the stability of the bridge. It also will reduce sediment transported from erosion in the wash into Lake Mead, as well as protect Lake Las Vegas Dam and outlet works.

Emergency Aid seeks volunteers to work in office

Emergency Aid of Boulder City is seeking volunteers from 9-11:45 a.m. Monday through Friday. Volunteers are needed to work in the office, assist clients or help with small office-type projects. The ability to work on a computer would be beneficial.

Emergency Aid is housed at the Department of Water and Power Building, 600 Nevada Way.

Emergency Aid is an all-volunteer organization.

Activities for children sought for annual Damboree

Organizers of the city’s Damboree on July Fourth, are seeking nonprofit organizations to offer activities for children such as face painting and games.

The festivities will be in Broadbent Park after the parade ends until 3 p.m.

At 4 p.m. Veterans’ Memorial Park will be the site of activities. For-profit vendors are sought to present games and offer food.

Sponsors sought for HELP’s annual golf tourney

HELP of Southern Nevada will present its 20th annual Golfers’ Roundup fundraiser and is seeking sponsorships for the tournament.

The event will tee off at 8:30 a.m. June 24 at Cascata Golf Course, 1 Cascata Dr. The entry fee is $350 for an individual or $1,400 for a team of four. Sponsorships are available starting at $1,500.

The nonprofit organization helps those in need, including the homeless or those in a crisis situation.

Writers group meets every Thursday at library

The Boulder City Writers Group meets from 7-8:20 p.m. each Thursday in the community room at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

Writers of all levels are welcome to attend to learn more about writing and receive feedback on their work.

American Legion breakfast served Thursday mornings

All veterans and their families are invited to the American Legion’s varied menu breakfast from 7-9 a.m. Thursdays at the American Legion Hall, 508 California Way, between Boulder Bowl and Grace Christian Academy.

Legionnaires and eligible veterans are invited to the American Legion meeting at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the hall.

Support group helps family of those with breathing problems

Area residents are invited to attend the Friends and Family of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease support group. The group meets at 10 a.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the Senior Center, 813 Arizona St.

Bruce Borchard of Vital Care leads the group, which explores ways for better living with COPD, asthma and emphysema. It is sanctioned by the Better Breathers and American Lung Association.

Walking group meets at Veterans Park

Boulder City United Methodist Fellowship has a walking group that meets at 8 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Veterans’ Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd. Group members walk 30 minutes before they begin their day. The Boulder City Branch of American Association of University Women meets at 7 p.m. the third Monday of each month in the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

Support groups help with memory loss, dementia

The Homestead at Boulder City is offering its Alzheimer’s support group, memory loss support group and dementia workshops on the third Thursday of each month. The groups will meet in the library at The Homestead, 1401 Medical Park Drive.

The Alzheimer’s group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; the memory loss group meets from 1-2 p.m.

There is no cost for these workshops and refreshments will be served. Those attending are welcome to bring a loved one, who will be cared for during the meeting.

Local churches join for weekday worship

Boulder City United Methodist Church and St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church offer a weekly worship called WOW or “Worship on Wednesday.” The 6:45 p.m. worship service is at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 812 Arizona St., and is a combination of contemporary praise music, prayer and a short reflection. The Revs. Sandy Johnson and Jim Lyons lead the service, with music direction by Bonnie McIntyre.
