Volleyball team to hold mattress fundraiser in gym on Saturday

Boulder City High School’s Lady Eagles volleyball team will hold its second annual mattress fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, in the auxiliary gym at the high school, 1101 Fifth St.

For the fundraiser, the gym will be transformed into a showroom, featuring more than 25 mattresses in all sizes and styles. Several name brands, such as Simmons Beautyrest, will be available at 50 percent off traditional retail prices.

All proceeds will benefit the volleyball team.

Story sessions, art club, movie scheduled at Boulder City Library

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming week. These include:

■ Drop-in story time, 10 a.m. Friday in the board room. For children 0-5 and their caregivers.

■ Movie, 5:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. “Collateral Beauty” will be shown.

■ Art club, 1 p.m. Saturday in the board room.

■ Virtual reality lab, 2:30-5 p.m. Monday, in the board room. For those 10 and older.

■ Baby lap-sit story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For those 0-24 months and their caregivers.

■ Crochet for a cause, 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the community room. Learn how to crochet a sleeping mat for the homeless out of plastic bags. For those 12 and older.

■ Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months and their caregivers.

■ Positive Action for teens, 3 p.m. Wednesday, in the community room. The nationally recognized, evidence-based program improves academic, behavior and character.

Lake Mead rangers to host night hike, special eclipse viewing event

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming week. These include:

■ Ranger hike: “Starry, Starry Night,” Saturday. Join a ranger and learn about the dark skies at the recreation area while hiking along the Historic Railroad Trail. It is an easy 3-mile hike. Participants should bring a flashlight. For details and reservations, call 702-293-8990.

■ Ranger program, solar eclipse viewing, 9 a.m.-noon Monday. The first total solar eclipse in the past 38 years will take place, though it will only be partially visible here. A social telescope and solar eclipse glasses will be available in the outdoor plaza area at the Alan Bible Visitor Center, 10 Lakeshore Road.

Note: The National Park Service will mark its birthday Aug. 25. Entrance fees to the park will be waived, but fees for camping, lake use and use of concessions still apply.

Master gardener to speak about preparations for fall this Saturday

Master gardener Libby Powell will speak on “Getting your vegetable garden ready for the fall” at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Boulder City Community Gardens, located on the corner of Railroad Avenue and Colorado Street.

Master gardeners will be at the gardens from 7-10 a.m. and invited people to join them as they prepare for fall gardening.
