Retired state employees to hear candidate for Assembly
The Boulder City Chapter of the Retired Public Employees of Nevada will hold its October membership meeting at 11 a.m. today at The Homestead at Boulder City, 1401 Medical Park Drive.
Guest speaker will be Craig Jordahl, candidate for Assembly District 23.
Members will gather for a no-host lunch at a local restaurant after the meeting.

Tarkanian to address Republican women’s club at luncheon
The Boulder City Republican Women will gather for its monthly meeting Oct. 20 in DeSimone’s Steakhouse at the Railroad Pass casino and hotel, 2800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson.
Featured speakers for the event will be Danny Tarkanian, Republican candidate for the 3rd Congressional District, and Heidi Harris, a radio talk show host.
Doors will open at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:45.

Lend a Hand’s volunteer training class will begin Tuesday
Lend a Hand will present a training class Tuesday for those interested in volunteering for the nonprofit organization. The group provides aid to senior citizens, handicapped and disabled residents.
The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lend a Hand office, 400 Utah St.

St. Christopher’s to host open house, prayer for peace
St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church will hold an ecumenical weekend of prayer and performance for peace in the world . The combined choirs of St. Christopher’s and Boulder City United Methodist Church will provide music for an evening of prayer at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
On Saturday, the church will remain open all day for those of all faiths to pray and contemplate the need for an end to violence and war.
The Sunday morning service at the church will be dedicated to the collective power of prayers for peace. At noon, there will be a blessing of the animals on the patio.

Boulder City United Methodist Church opening pumpkin patch
Boulder City United Methodist Church will open a pumpkin patch as a fundraiser for the nonprofit’s ministries in the city.
The pumpkin patch will be at 812 Arizona St., at the corner of Utah Street. It opens Monday and continues through Oct. 31. Hours will be noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 2-8 p.m. Sunday.
In addition to selling pumpkins and other fall items, there will be story times for children at 2 p.m. weekdays and at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturdays.

Story sessions, club meetings on tap at library
Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming week.

■ Lego challenge, 3:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. The session is designed for those 6 and older.
■ Anime club, 1 p.m. Saturday in the community room. For those in junior high grades.
■ After School Math Adventures, 3:30 p.m. Monday in the community room. The program is for those in kindergarten through fifth grade and is sponsored by Vegas PBS.
■ Drop-in story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For children under 5 and their caregivers.
■ Adult book club, 7 p.m. Tuesday in the community room.
■ Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months and their caregivers.
■ Positive Action for Teens, 3 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. The nationally recognized, evidence-based program helps teens improve academic performance. For ages 12-18.

Rangers to help children learn about Lake Mead
Lake Mad National Recreation Area will host a chat with rangers titled “Outdoor Fun: A Child’s Nature Perspective.” Sessions are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center, 10 Lakeshore Road, and will focus on ways children can get in touch with nature and discover more about the recreation area.

Homestead breakfast to benefit Emergency Aid
The Homestead at Boulder City will host its annual country breakfast to benefit Emergency Aid of Boulder City on Oct. 29.
From 8-10 a.m., a breakfast of biscuits and gravy, eggs, juice and coffee will be served. A suggested donation of $3 or two cans of nonperishable food is requested.
Reservations are not necessary and all are welcome to attend.

Senior center hosting family Halloween event
The Senior Center of Boulder City will present its second annual Halloween Family Fun Night for the community Oct. 28. Festivities will begin at 4:30 p.m.
The event will include a costume contest, games, dancing, trick-or-treat bag contest, music and raffle.
Food and drinks will be available, including a pizza and drink combination for $1.50 and cupcakes for 50 cents.
Raffle tickets will be sold for 25 cents or five for $1.
The senior center is at 813 Arizona St.
Art guild puts fall, winter on display
Members of Boulder City Art Guild have several exhibits of their work around the city.
In their gallery inside the Boulder Dam Hotel, the works of Lynda Whitehair are being showcased this month. Her exhibit, “Arts and Crafts,” includes drawings, weavings and ceramics.
They are displaying autumn- and winter-themed pieces at their Art From the Heart exhibit at Boulder City Hospital, 901 Adams Blvd. More than 30 pieces of work are on display and the exhibit continues through the end of the year. All pieces are for sale and can be purchased at the guild’s gallery.
Members also have created an exhibit, “The Old West,” at Hoover Dam Lodge, which will remain on display through the end of the year. The exhibit features about 40 pieces of art. The resort is at 18000 U.S. Highway 93.

Rotary to present evening of wine, painting
Rotary Club of Boulder City will present A Wine and Canvas Evening on Nov. 1 at the Senior Center of Boulder City, 813 Arizona St.
The event, scheduled to start at 6 p.m., will provide participants the opportunity to paint a picture while enjoying wine, appetizers and fellowship. All supplies will be provided.
The cost is $50 per person or $90 a couple.
Reservations are required and payment is due when reservations are made. Space is limited.
