Democrats to prepare for November election

The Boulder City Democratic Club will meet at 6:30 tonight at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

Members will be making plans for the November 2016. Also, Christina Lodge of Lend-A-Hand will speak about the need for volunteers to assist local residents.

PFLAG to meet Tuesday at library

PFLAG, formerly Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

The group offers roundtable discussions centered on education, advocacy and mutual support to discuss family issues with others who have experienced sexual orientation issues.

Library to host ‘Aladdin’ production, book club meetings

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. These include:

■ Best Dam Readers book club, 9 a.m. today in the community room.

■ After School Math Adventure, 10 a.m. today in the community room. Part of a four-week session for kindergartners through fifth-graders and their caregivers.

■ STEAM club, 3:30 p.m. today in the community room. Explore science, technology, engineering, art and math through stories, crafts and activities. For those 6-11.

■ Hampstead Stage presents “Aladdin,” 11 a.m. Friday in the community room.

■ Keeping Kids Fit Club, 3:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. The six-week program educates kids and caregivers about the importance of eating and living healthy.

■ Movie, 5:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. “Eddie the Eagle” about Olympic ski jumper Eddie Edwards will be shown.

■ Adult and teen craft, beaded sandals, 1 p.m. Saturday in the community room. Open to those 12 and older. Reservations and a $5 refundable deposit are required.

■ Living with chronic illnesses, 10 a.m. Monday in the community room. Part of a six-week session for adults with a chronic disease and/or their caregiver. Call or stop by to register.

■ Anime club, 5 p.m. Monday in the board room. For those in junior high grades.

■ Drop in story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For all ages.

■ Adult book club, 7 p.m. Tuesday in the community room.

■ Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months and their caregivers.

Hikes, listening day
on tap at Lake Mead

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming week.

These include:

■ Ranger hike, Sunday. Join rangers for an early morning hike along the shoreline where the wetlands meet the lake. Learn why birds migrate, what their nesting habits are and why they stop at Lake Mead. Bring binoculars. Advance registration required.

■ Ranger chat: “World Listening Day,” 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center, 10 Lakeshore Road. Learn how human-caused sound can impact nature’s soundscape. There will be hands-on activities and a listening kiosk.

■ Story time with a ranger at Boulder City Library, 10 a.m. Tuesday. Learn about the Mojave Desert and the animals that live there. Songs, arts and crafts will be part of the session at the library, 701 Adams Blvd.

■ Ranger hike, Animals of the Night, July 22. Join a ranger for a night hike along the Bluffs Trail at Las Vegas Bay. Learn about nocturnal animals and how they benefit from the darkness. Bring a flashlight. Reservations required.

Church hosting special summer camp

Boulder City United Methodist Church will hold a special event in August for children who will be entering kindergarten through fifth grade in the fall. SonSpark Labs Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 8-11 in the multiuse building, 1204 Sixth St.

During the camp, children will learn through games, science experiments, Bible stories and music.

What is a critical access hospital?

According to the Rural Health Information Hub, a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) is a designation given to eligible rural hospitals who meet certain criteria. This designation was created by Congress via the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 due to the closures of over 400 rural hospitals during the 1980s through the early 1990s. The CAH designation was designed to improve health care access to Americans living in rural areas as well as provided financial stability to the facilities that serve these communities.

This past Saturday, Martha P. King Elementary School joined Andrew J. Mitchell Elementary, Garrett Junior High School, and Boulder City High School at the CCSD Recruitment Fair hosted at Rancho High School. This event marked another important step in our community’s ongoing effort to showcase the exceptional educational opportunities available in Boulder City.
