Story sessions, club meetings planned at library

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has activities planned for the coming week. These include:

■ After-School Math Adventure, 10 a.m. today in the community room. Part of a four-week session for kindergartners through fifth-graders and their caregivers.

■ Lego challenge, 3:30 p.m. today in the community room. The session is designed for those 6 and older.

■ Keeping Kids Fit Club, 3:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. The six-week program educates kids and caregivers about the importance of eating and living healthy.

■ Science Exploration Club, 3:30 Friday in the board room. Explore science through stories, experiments and crafts. For children 3-6.

■ Living with chronic illnesses, 10 a.m. Monday in the community room. Part of a six-week session for adults with a chronic disease and/or their caregiver. Call or stop by to register.

■ Anime club, 5 p.m. Tuesday in the board room. For those in junior high grades.

■ Drop-in story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For all ages.

■ Video game panel, 7 p.m. Tuesday in the community room. Join a video game/technology journalist, AMD Red Team Member, and a former GameStop manager to talk about video games and technology.

■ Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months and their caregivers.

■ Positive Action for Teens, 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. WestCare will host a nationally recognized program for improving academic performance and behavior.

Lake Mead to host chat, ranger hike

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming week. These include:

■ Ranger chat: “Public Lands: Treasures of Southern Nevada,” 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center, 10 Lakeshore Road. Learn about the variety of public lands in the Las Vegas area.

■ Ranger hike, July 17. Join rangers for an early morning hike along the shoreline where the wetlands meet the lake. Learn why birds migrate, what their nesting habits are and why they stop at Lake Mead. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars. Advance registration required.

Democrats to prepare for November election at July 14 meeting

The Boulder City Democratic Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. July 14 at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. Members make plans for the November 2016 election. Also, Christina Lodge of Lend-A-Hand will speak about the need for volunteers to assist local residents.

PFLAG to meet July 19 at library

PFLAG, formerly Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, will meet at 7 p.m. July 19 at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

The group offers roundtable discussions centered on education, advocacy and mutual support to discuss family issues with others who have experienced sexual orientation issues.

Artist’s work studies animals, landscapes; reception planned

Artwork by Debra Wilson, which presents a study in Americana, animals and landscapes, is being featured this month in the Boulder City Art Guild’s gallery inside the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

Wilson began painting when she was 5 years old and continued to follow her passion through high school and college, where she focused on commercial art.

Her lifelike images of wildlife in acrylic paints have garnered numerous awards.

A reception in her honor will be held from 1-3 p.m. July 17 at the gallery. All are welcome to attend.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

Additionally, members have art exhibited at Hoover Dam Lodge, which will remain on display through November, and at the Boulder City Hospital, which will be displayed through Aug. 31.
