Cocktail walk, golf tourney support Leach fund

The Dan Leach Memorial Fund is hosting two of its largest annual events next week to raise money for local youth.

The annual Old Town Cocktail Walk is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 9, followed by the Dan Leach Memorial Golf Tournament at 1 p.m. Oct. 10.

The two events have grown every year since their inception in 2011, said memorial fund president Laura Leach, contributing more than $75,000 for local children to pay for activities they would otherwise not be able to afford. The events honor the memory of former Las Vegas police officer Dan Leach.

The organization helps pay for underprivileged youth to participate in events such as Little League, dance and art classes, said Laura Leach.

“Dan was very big in youth activity and youth involvement and to honor him we’ve made that our focus.”

Cocktail walk tickets are $20 per person and include four drinks at participating downtown locations: Evan’s Old Town Grille, Boulder Dam Brewing Co., Jack’s Place Sports Bar and Grill, Milo’s Cellar and Inn, Scratch House and The Dillinger Food and Drinkery.

Those going on the walk can buy tickets in advance or on the night of the event in front of the chamber of commerce, 465 Nevada Way.

The golf tournament will be played at Boulder Creek Golf Course, 1501 Veterans Memorial Drive. Registration can be completed in advance on the fund’s website at wwwdanleachmemorialfund.org, or at the golf course on tournament day. Tournament-day registration begins at 11:30 a.m.

The tournament follows a scramble format with golf-themed prizes for the winning foursomes. Additional prizes will be awarded on designated holes for longest drives, closest to the pin and longest putts. After the round, golfers will finish the day with a dinner and silent auction.

Entry fees of $125 per person include golf, dinner and raffle tickets for prizes donated by the community.

Dinner-only tickets are $30. The meal is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

The Dan Leach Memorial Fund was created in memory of Dan Leach, a Boulder City resident and Metropolitan Police Department police officer who was killed in a Nov. 21, 2009, auto accident. The nonprofit fund is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.
