FBI crime report good news for Boulder City

By Thomas Finn, Boulder City Police Chief

Last week the FBI released the 2009 version of “Crime in the United States.”

The report is a statistical compilation of offense and arrest data reported by law enforcement agencies throughout the United States that voluntarily participate in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program.

The program collects information on crimes reported by law enforcement agencies for the violent crimes of murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. It also collects information on the property crimes of burglary, larceny and theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson.

In 2009, there were 17,985 city, county, university and college, state, tribal, and federal agencies that participated in the reporting program. Those agencies represent 96.3 percent of the country’s population. Data from the program can be viewed on the FBI’s website, www.fbi.gov, under the “Uniform Crime Reports” heading.

Personal reflections on the events of Sept. 11

Although I stated in my last column that I would devote this week’s article to the second hero in my life, the events of the past weekend reminded me of the need to recognize and honor other Americans who are truly heroes.

On Saturday we, as a nation, held memorial services throughout the United States for the victims and heroes of 9/11. The combined attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon resulted in the deaths of 2,973 people.

Forty-four more people died aboard United Flight 93 in Shanksville, Penn., as they attempted to prevent the hijackers from crashing the plane into another high profile target, the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington D.C.

Of the 2,752 people who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center, 343 firefighters and 60 police officers perished as they heroically attempted to save the lives of the innocent.
