Energy allocation from dam extended: Hoover Dam supplies nearly 47 percent of Boulder City’s power

By Jack Johnson, Boulder City Review

Boulder City can rest assured that its energy costs will remain somewhat stable in the future thanks to the U.S. Congress extending the city’s allocation of Hoover Dam power for the next 55 years.

The Hoover Power Allocation Act of 2011, a bill signed by President Barack Obama on Dec. 20, extends the contract for the various entities using dam power until the year 2067.

The current agreement dates back to 1984 and was set to expire in 2017, leaving the power contractors in California, Arizona and Nevada with the possibility that allocations could have been altered with the contract’s renewal.

Tearing down Heck

Arnold M. Knightly, The Editor's Desk

In last week’s column I discussed how current Republican Congressman Joe Heck avoided a rematch with Dina Titus, the former representative for Nevada’s District 3 who narrowly lost to Heck in 2010. Titus and many other Democrats have decided to jump into Congressional races in more left-leaning districts instead of taking the incumbent Heck head-on.

That is, Democrats other than state Assembly Speaker John Oceguera. Although his campaign office told me last week he was going to run in the 3rd District, which includes Boulder City, he didn’t officially make a lot of noise about it until Tuesday when he issued a press release.

Opinion: Wild horses loathed by ranchers, loved by America

By John L. Smith, Nevada Smith

If I didn’t know better, I’d think there was something in the water.

HORSE LAUGH: The smartest move at the state Legislature – and how many times do I use “smartest” and “Legislature” in the same sentence during the year – is to shelve AB 329, which redefines “wild life” in Nevada to exclude wild horses and burros.

Horse lovers have loudly argued that the proposed law would have the force of enabling ranchers to block wild mustangs and burros from water holes. Advocates for ranchers, and by that I mean rural legislators, counter that the legislation would clarify the proper role of the Bureau of Land Management to provide for the federally protected species.

GOP finds strong support in BC: City runs red on election day

By Arnold M. Knightly, Boulder City Review

Defeated U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle may want to look into buying a house in Boulder City where she would, apparently, be among friends.

Angle and many Republicans did at least 10 percentage points better in Boulder City during the Nov. 2 election than in the rest of Clark County and the state, complete election results released last week show.

Boulder City residents cast their ballots on Nov. 2 at the city's recreation center. Nearly 75.6 percent of the city's 9,559 registered voters participated in the midterm elections. City residents heavily backed Republican candidates including defeated U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle, who received 55.8 percent of the local vote. Photo by Steve Andrascik

Angle captured 55.8 percent of the vote in Boulder City, 14.5 points better than she did in Clark County and 11.2 points higher than the statewide total.

Under the national glare, Reid prevails: Conservatives make minimal gains in the state

By Geoff Schumacher, Special to the Boulder City Review

After months of campaign rancor, Nevadans voted to keep Harry Reid as their senior senator for six more years.

In the glare of the national spotlight, Reid fended off a fierce challenge from Republican Sharron Angle to earn a fifth term and retain his position as the U.S. Senate’s majority leader.

With 100 percent of the ballots tallied statewide, Reid received 361,655 votes, or 50 percent, and Angle received 320,996 votes, or 45 percent. Third place went to None of These Candidates, the choice of 16,174 voters, or 2.2 percent.

Local church honors families of fallen soldiers

Linda Garrison, board president of Grace Community Church, stands next to a table of fallen Nevada servicemen and women on Sept. 19. The church honored the soldiers' families on Gold Star Mothers' and Families' Day, a national day of support for the families.

By Jack Johnson, Boulder City Review

A special church service honoring the families of servicemen who recently died on active duty during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars was held Sunday at Grace Community Church.

It drew families of eight servicemen, Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., the Patriot Guard Riders and Marine Riders motorcycle groups and plenty of supporters. It was the fourth annual service Grace has held in observance of Gold Star Mother’s and Families’ Day.

The day is a national day of support for families of servicemen who have died either at home or abroad while on active duty.

It marks the last Sunday in September with a presidential proclamation.

Veterans Home celebrates eighth anniversary

By Jack Johnson & Arnold M. Knightly, Boulder City Review

Residents of Nevada State Veterans Home were treated to not the usual one, but three days of activities coinciding with the facility’s eighth anniversary.

Aug. 12, the home partnered with the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce for an open house anniversary celebration, which also served as the chamber’s monthly mixer event.

Friday, the United States Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team made a stop by the home to perform for residents.
