Moderate temperatures make for a pleasant hike at Railroad Tunnel Trail

Now is a great time of year to head out to Lake Mead National Recreation Area and enjoy the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail. The moderate temperatures lend themselves to a brisk walk or ride, and the short days are no drawback to completing the relatively short and easily accessible routes this trail offers.

Start 2012 with visit to South Rim of Grand Canyon

A New Year’s resolution you can still make and carry out is to visit one of the nearby national parks with which our region is so richly blessed. One of the best for winter months is the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It’s not so very far, and this time of year, not so very full of other visitors. Yet with its usual light winter blanket of snow, the South Rim is at its most beautiful.

Harvest method determines orange’s life once off tree

There is no pruning class Saturday at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Orchard in North Las Vegas, but I will be there pruning. Community members are invite to come out around 9 a.m. and learn by pruning. I will be pruning peaches and nectarines.

Henderson preserve perfect visit this time of year

Henderson’s Bird Viewing Preserve is just such a place — an oasis of natural peace hidden close to the urban bustle of the Las Vegas Valley.

Zabriskie Point to Golden Canyon great winter hike

Wildlife refuge habitat for migratory birds

Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge north of Las Vegas in Lincoln County was established in 1963 to provide a wintering habitat for migratory birds including a large variety of waterfowl. “Pahranagat” is a Paiute word meaning “valley of shining water.”

Ash Meadows oasis of endangered species

Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge serves at least two important functions: preserving rare creatures and plants, and preserving the sanity of urban visitors by surrounding them with the beauty of green wetlands, glimpses of small fish darting through natural pools, and the sound of birdsong.

Natural Bridges’ rewards worth time

Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah isn’t the easiest park to get to but the rewards are well worth your time. The drive really becomes one of the rewards for it wraps the traveler in some of the most spectacular scenery of the Southwest.

Death Valley’s ’singing’ dunes among tallest in U.S.

Some of the tallest sand dunes in North America can be found in the remote and extreme northern section of Death Valley National Park, Calif. The Eureka Dunes, located in the enclosed Eureka Valley, have a base elevation of about 3,000 feet and from there they rise up nearly 700 feet more. The formation is about three miles long from north to south, and one mile wide.

Fall season great time to explore Pine Creek Canyon

With the temperatures in our region finally cooling off, now is a good time to head out to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. There are many canyons to explore in the park but Pine Creek Canyon should be tops on your short list.

Pine Creek Canyon is not only stunning geologically but has dense vegetation, a seasonally flowing creek and remains of an old homestead from the 1920s. The official trail, which includes a loop, is a moderate two-and-one-half miles, yet for more adventure and some rock scrambling there are plenty of opportunities to explore the upper reaches of the canyon.
