Reasons to love our town plentiful

If you ever needed more proof that Southern Nevada — and Boulder City in particular — is an ideal place to live, this past week or so would be it.

At the end of last month, local residents came together to support their family and friends in their battles against cancer while raising funds for research and other needs during the annual Relay For Life.

Through individual and team efforts more than $21,000 was raised. But more than that, the relay boosted the spirits of those whose lives are touched by cancer. Whether a fighter, survivor or caretaker, meeting others who are/were going through the same experience can help to lighten the load.

Just days later, the community invited everyone to come celebrate and enjoy some camaraderie at the Spring Jamboree.

The annual event sets out the welcome mat for people to stop by and see what it is that makes Boulder City so special.

There were activities, entertainment, a car show, gem and mineral show, crafts booths and foods to appeal to practically everyone regardless of age or interest.

Smiles and laughter could be seen and heard throughout the two-day event — even among those who were undoubtedly near exhaustion after countless hours coordinating and setting up the celebration.

Downtown businesses joined in the fun as they hosted sidewalk sales and other specials to keep folks happy during their visit.

Then there’s the beautiful weather.

This week we are expecting temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s. Compared to the triple-digit temperatures we will be experiencing in the near future, these are idyllic. You can enjoy a steaming cup of coffee outdoors in the morning without shivering or barbecue dinner at night without sweltering.

Sure, there was a bit of rain, hail and a few scattered thunderstorms over the weekend. Aside from some minor inconvenience, the water was much needed and made our gardens and landscapes greener while saving precious natural resources.

(Mind you, I’m not taking into account the traffic crashes from people who don’t know how to drive when rain falls or refuse to slow down and take precautions while roads are more slippery.)

This is just the start of months full of activities created to help area residents take advantage of the city’s bounty. From talent shows to barbecue challenges to galas recognizing outstanding contributions to the city, with special events at schools and among local organizations in between, the reasons why we call Southern Nevada home are plentiful.

No parade passes us by

The start of a new year is always a big deal for me. But it’s not the fireworks or parties that I look forward to as one year melds into another.

Change marks past year

As I look back at the past 361 days, there is one thing throughout 2017 that has been constant: change.

‘Twas the baking before Christmas

Last year, many readers commented how much they enjoyed my column about holiday baking and requested that I make this an annual tradition. With apologies to Clement Clarke Moore, here it is:

Feminism dominates 2017

Earlier this week, Merriam-Webster, a leading authority on language, declared “feminism” as 2017’s word of the year.

Santa’s arrival heralds magical time

I have come to the conclusion that there truly is something magical about Santa’s red suit. It can turn back time.

Sample sights, sounds, tastes of holidays

Now that you have enjoyed your Thanksgiving dinner, shopped all the Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday sales, and polished off the leftovers, it’s time to let the holiday celebration begin in earnest.

Reasons to be thankful plentiful

Since our paper comes out each Thursday and Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of the month, it seems natural to take this opportunity to give thanks for all the blessings that have come my way — and the way of this staff — over the past 365 days.

Time too precious to squander

It’s been said that time and tide wait for no man.

Time brings steps in right direction

It’s been said that time flies when you’re having fun. I’ve also heard that time passes much more quickly the older you get.
