Law enforcement is a dangerous profession, and 2010 has already proven to be a particularly deadly year. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, during the first half of 2009, 61 officers were killed in the line of duty. Sadly, during the first half of 2010, 87 officers died in the line of duty, a 43 percent increase over last year. Admittedly, 2009 was a good year for law enforcement. The number of officers killed in the line of duty was 116, the lowest number of line-of-duty deaths since 1959. So far this year, deaths by firearms are up 41 percent and traffic-related fatalities increased by 35 percent.
