SHIRLEY ELLEN JOHNSON, Aug. 3, 1921 – Oct. 28, 2010
Shirley Ellen Johnson, 89, passed away at her home in Boulder City on Oct. 28, 2010. Shirley was born on August 3, 1921, in Grand Marais, Minn., to Carl and Caroline Zimmerman Erstguard.
Shirley grew up in Grand Marais and Grand Portage, Minn. She married JR Johnson on July 2, 1948, in Tucson, Ariz., and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on July 2, 1964. JR preceded her in death in 2008 after 60 years of marriage.
Shirley was the first woman deputy in the state of Utah. They moved to Boulder City in 1994 from Salt Lake City after she retired from being an accounts payable clerk for the Granite School District for 18 years.
She was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, served in many callings and loved doing temple work. She volunteered for many charity functions. She loved square dancing, golfing and camping. She will be remembered as a loving mother by her children, and as having a great sense of humor.
Shirley is survived by her four children, Diane (Wayne) Kerner, John (Diana) Johnson, Robert Johnson, and Julie Moseley; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Fifth Street LDS Chapel in Boulder City. A visitation was held prior to the service. Shirley was buried with her husband at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of Boulder City Family Mortuary.
