Finn: Enforcing the “jake break” laws lessens noise for residents

By Chief Thomas Finn, Boulder City Police

During the past few months I’ve received several complaints from residents in the Hemenway Valley who are awakened at all hours of the night by southbound truckers on the truck route who use their engine compression brakes on the downhill incline.

Using the “jake brakes” saves wear and tear on a truck’s wheel brakes, but when a truck’s muffler isn’t working properly the resulting noise can be deafening. There are signs posted on U.S. Highway 93 south, just before the Rebel gas station and on the truck route near Albertsons, that state, “No Engine Brake – 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.”
